Visual Art
Form
Students studied the Element of Art Form in this chalk pastel piece. The purpose of this work is to create a realistic looking solid shape, incorporating a light side and shadowed side. Other concepts explored were cast shadow, background, midground, foreground, and finally a review of color theory.

Landscape
Landscape pieces are one of five major genres found in art. There can be many styles of landscape art from realistic to abstract. These varied pieces were self-selected by students and studied through a series of ‘tryouts’. Part of the IB curriculum is to utilize this process of investigation to experiment with different techniques, then choose the best result for their resolved art piece.

Window to the Soul: Symbolic Self-Portraits
Portraiture, whether realistic or abstract, is one of five major genres found in art. These varied pieces hold one common thread, an eye is the focus or emphasis of the piece. Students then self-selected visual symbols to convey their personal identity. They finished their work with some form of value (shading) whether in color or in graphite.

Watercolor and Indian Ink
The idea behind this lesson was to build a student’s creativity. Being a creative learner does not always come naturally, you have to practice. We used ink spread into water, then we teased an image out… maybe a student saw an octopus in the ink, or maybe a house.
