Visual Art

Students were introduced to the medium of watercolor through a series of technique practice where they learned about value, tinting, shading, and basic principles of watercolor. They went on to paint a landscape inspired by Jen Aranyi, a modern working artist. They also painted a moon and sun piece, which is a very traditional art form found all over the world.

Ocean Tempera Painting

Students were introduced to the art of tempera painting. Tempera paint is one of the oldest and most widely used forms of painting, at least until the introduction of oil painting during the renaissance. Every lesson will begin with a technique session where students learn how to hold their brush, or make a particular mark. In this ocean lesson, we practiced creating a gradation, and how to tint the paint. We then chose to paint either a moonset or sunset painting. Students finished by adding stars or moonglow, or in the case of the sunset, the bright, beautiful colors that hung over their ocean.

Drama

This semester, Grade 6 students were introduced to the fundamentals of drama which began with covering basic stage terminology. Once students were well acquainted with the stage, they explored effective staging and body positioning through the use of tableaus and miming. Students experimented with levels, shapes, and facial expressions in order to tell a story with a clear beginning, middle and end. Following the tableau and miming units, speech was introduced into their pieces through the use of script work. Students explored the basic elements of a script along with how to effectively project their voices in order to be heard clearly on stage.
